Leave everything on the road
Nov 1st, 2008 by Lynne
There’s a saying amongst cyclists — to leave everything on the road. This means doing your absolute best and holding nothing back. Later, when the race is over, you won’t have to wonder if you did everything you could. You’ll know you left it all on the road.
Between now and the election, I’m using what’s left of my voice to get out the vote for Barack Obama and Jim Martin here in Georgia. I only just got my voice back after a nasty cold, and I hope hot tea and throat lozenges will keep me going at least until Tuesday. So far, the work has been really encouraging. People are very fired up this year.
I won’t be able to volunteer during the day on Tuesday, unfortunately. It’ll be my second day at a new job, so I can’t take time off. John will be doing get-out-the-vote stuff as well as keeping an eye out for voter suppression. You wouldn’t believe what people try sometimes — challenging every single voter in order to make the lines even longer than they are or tearing up the roads around polling places so that it’s difficult to get in to vote.
I’ll be glad when the election is over! :-)
