Stranger than fiction

Pathological liars existed before the Internet. No doubt about that. But the Internet obscures the chemical and visual cues that might tip you off in a face-to-face interaction.
I followed a link from Dear Author’s über-thread on the most recent plagiarism scandal to a story in LA Weekly about a long-distance Internet romance that turned out to be just the mind games of a pathological liar. It makes for fascinating reading but, alas, doesn’t surprise me much. I’ve been on the Internet for thirteen years and various online systems and bulletin boards for over a decade before that, so I’ve seen a crapload of crazy.

Never know what kind of human trash you’re gonna dig up on the Internets, do you? Except sometimes, every once in a while, a couple of people meet and turn out to be just as advertised.
We won the lottery a long time ago; no doubt about it. I love you, sweetie.
