So we finally bought Neverwinter Nights 2

Unfortunately, NWN2 refuses to run on John’s PC, so I’ll have to upgrade his OS to XP. We also bought a copy of Fable, but it won’t run on either of our main PCs. I suspect Fable hates my nice sound card, so I’ll have to crack the case and yank out the board.
Grr! :-)
I’m boiling huge pots of water as we speak, because the humidity’s way too low for me to risk touching anything inside the computers. I have all the usual nerdware for working on computer guts, including anti-static gear, but I’m just not willing to risk blowing out a board. Two of my favorite local geek shops went out of business last year, so I’d probably be stuck with mail order for replacement parts. Bleah.
I played NWN2 for a few hours last weekend, but I haven’t had a chance to try the toolset. When I saw a preview of the tools at GenCon, I was fairly impressed, so maybe when I get done cussing over upgrades I’ll give the toolset a try. The campaign that comes with the game seems well-written, but it feels awfully linear, even down to the terrain itself. I got spoiled with Oblivion, where you can walk on damn near anything and go anywhere you like. In NWN2, it’s almost like you’re riding around on rails.
But anyway, I do have hope that the single-player campaign for NWN2 will have a good story, because I’ve heard that some former Black Isle folks worked on it. Black Isle Studios created Planescape: Torment, which I still say is the best game story of all time.

Like a doofus, I started installing NWN2 without having read the system requirements. I know it’s been a couple of years since Lynne built us new state-of-the-art machines, but I’m so out of the gaming loop it never even occurred to me that there were already games out that *require* XP. Silly me.
You’d think that an installation wizard might be smart enough to check the system it’s trying to become one with. Having spotted my error a few minutes after starting, I waited to be called names by the wizard. Nuh-uh. NWN2 let me complete the lengthy installation process, put the game on my Programs menu…and it doesn’t fire up. Not so bad, you might say. However, the Uninstall NWN2 program won’t start, either. I’m stuck with a big black hole on my hard drive until I reformat, I guess.
Ah, well. XP is a mature OS, by Microsoft standards. I really want to play with the NWN2 toolset, and don’t care much about the game itself…so it may be time for this ‘puter to enter the twenty-first century.
