Trying to make sense of my Genographic report
Jan 16th, 2007 by Lynne
A while back, John and I signed up to participate in National Geographic’s Genographic Project, and we just received notice that our DNA tests have finally been processed.
Umm, wow.
This is going to take a while to read through and figure out. So far, I’m not seeing any evidence of Native American blood on my mother’s side, but I’m not surprised. All of that ancestry is through my father’s family, and if I understand this test correctly, only the maternal line was analyzed. Maybe I need to get my dad’s sister and one of his brothers to do the test.
Has anyone else done this and gotten their results?

When we adopted our boys from Guatemala, there were a bunch of folks on that list that had just sent off their DNA for analysis. Unfortunately, my life got so busy when we got back that I didn’t keep in touch to find out about their results.
Is this the test of mitocrondrial DNA? (I think that’s the spelling :).) I read the book, The Seven Daughters of Eve by the guy that discovered the process of tracing everyone on earth today back to those seven women through mitocondrial DNA. I’d love to have that test myself.
No, got a link? Sounds interesting.
Delete my stupid comment above, please. Of course there’s a link. This is Lynne. Duh.
Hi, Pam! It’s a neat project. Kinda makes me wish I could sign up for even more in-depth tests, just to see what would come back. So much of our family history was lost in the Civil War that I really don’t know much about my ancestry before then.
Hi, Michelle! Yes, it’s a mitochondrial DNA analysis. My haplotype is J*, whatever that means. I suspect it means I’m not anything all that unusual!
Hi, Jody! Do you really want me to delete it? :-)
You crack me up!
How fun! I’d love to do something like that. My mother’s line is Russian Jews, but she, her brother and sister were all redheads. My cousin thinks some redheaded cossack came across a female ancestor and raped her. OTOH, King David supposedly was redheaded. (I got that piece of information from a mystery with the main character a rabbi.)
Let us know what you find out. :)
So far, I think we’re generic white folks, basically. ;-)
What a fascinating ancestry, Edie!
